Spacecraft Theater: Hermès H Box mobile cinema lands in Japan

The high-art trend of launching mobile museums into the wild is gaining steam with the latest "artcraft" coming in the form of the H Box. The structure was produced by fashion brand Hermès and designed by architect Didier Fiuza Faustino, who calls his work "a nomadic object informed 1970s space landing crafts."

Inside the H Box films by international creators such as Su-Mei Tse, Yael Bartana, Dora García, Judit Kúrtag, Valérie Mréjen, and Shahryar Nashat are shown. Like the Chanel Mobile Museum, the H Box easily breaks apart for transport to cities around the world. The next stop for the artcraft is Yokohama, Japan from September 13 to November 30. Ferrari Monza Concept

By designer Iman Maghsoudi his Ferrari Monza borrows styling cues from the Ferrari Enzo. The Monza’s aerodynamic profile is supposed to allow it to travel at speeds of over 200 km/hr. And since high-speedin’ humans are a liability, the Monza’s computer system takes over driving duties once you hit a certain m.p.h. The vehicle will also change shape to become even more aerodynamic and to create a little lift to reduce friction.

Windshape / nArchitects

Windshape was constructed by nARCHITECTS and a team of SCAD students over a period of five weeks. The architects developed a construction sequence that optimized the use of measured and non-measured fabrication methods. The basic components of string, plastic pipes and aluminum collars were all digitally modeled and translated into a set of 2D drawings and data. To achieve the project’s complex, interwoven geometries, the pavilions were built as a series of stacked and staggered “tripods”. Comprised of groups of three pipes inserted into an aluminum collar, the tripods were pre-assembled, woven with string on the ground, and hoisted in place. Interstitial string surfaces were then woven in between the tripods in the air.

nARCHITECTS exploited the different properties of two weak and supple materials to create a strong yet elastic structural network. Similar to an archer’s bow, the pipes were placed in bending and the string in tension to achieve structural integrity as well as a desired range of movement in the wind. The interdependent structural system of string, pipes and collars required a flexible fabrication method. An initial stitching of string through the pipes allowed for improvisation in weaving strategies to provide enclosure, openings or stability. In this way, Windshape’s indeterminate structure relied equally on precise translations from digital models as well as in-situ building tactics.

Tape-Master Turns BMW Into A Wrap Star

After you choose which car to buy, the hardest decision is picking out the color. Of course you want to get something that’s in style at the moment, but will remain cool through a number of different trend changes, because (good) paint jobs are expensive. The owner of this BMW 335i found the perfect solution for those of you ballin’ on a budget: wrapping your car…
It’s mostly seen on rap promo vans, but many aftermarket tuners have begun wrapping their cars as an alternative to droppin’ Gs at a paint shop. After seeing the color white come back in style heavy in his native Germany, the owner of this black Bimmer coupe decided to wrap (or foil) it with 3M’s shiny white tape. Besides changing up the color, the tape will also protect the car’s original paint for a couple years. It’ll also make it easy for homie to evade the cops if need be.

Munetsugu Hall by Norihiko Dan

The munetsugu hall designed by japanese architect norihiko dan is a small concert hall in nagoya japan. The hall design needed to take into consideration sound insulation, as it is located in a residential area. It was built around a square shoe box plan in order to give excellent acoustics. Flooring inside the hall is of particular interest as it was made from 200 year old japanese red pine, that was previously used as beams in an old house. Among one of the many features of the hall is its performance space, wherecurved shapes protrude from the white walls. Its ceiling is approximately 6m high and seats up to 310 people. Munetsugu hall was a privately funded project and opened at the end of march this year.

LIGHT SCULPTURE - SITOOTERIE II

The directors of the National Malus (crab-apple) Collection invited Heatherwick Studio to develop the design of the structure called the Sitooterie for their site in Essex.

Derived from the Scottish, a 'sitooterie' is a small building in which to literally "sit oot".

The structure is a cube punctured by over 5000 long thin windows that project from all its surfaces and lift it off the ground. The cube, which measures 2.4 x 2.4 metres, is precision-machined from 15mm anodised aluminium and the windows are 18mm square-section aluminium tubes glazed with transparent orange acrylic.

As the long thin windows all point at the exact centre of the cube, it only takes a single light source, located at this central point, to send light through every tube, causing the windows to glow orange. A small number of them also project into the cube to form seating.
